Notes on "Sifting Sand": We are never the same person twice as sand continually sifts through the sieve of time. We may forget this and take for granted the person whom we'd forged a connection with; they will be someone new and different to us every time. As we fixate on who they were to us, we're only seeing a mirage through time.
SIFTING SAND
Music & lyrics: Vina Nguyen (December 2019)
Here I am, in this space
You don't understand
A gulf of time sits between us
We're holding silence in our hands.
Wait with me, wait and see,
Shadows lifting off our wings.
Wait with me, wait and see,
Butterflies swarming at the brink...
Sifting sand...
Shift the weight with buried legs,
Choke our thirst sifting sand...
Run away through tunnels, gates,
Mirage is gone, sifting sand...
Our desert glow now ends with no,
So let us go... Sift... the sand...
My outline fades
Things you'd rather leave
From your memory
Your time with me, I understand.
So, wait with me, wait and see,
Shadows lifting off our wings.
Wait with me, wait and see,
Butterflies swarming at the brink...
Sifting sand...
Shift the weight with buried legs,
Choke our thirst sifting sand...
Run away through tunnels, gates,
Mirage is gone, sifting sand...
Our desert glow now ends with no,
So let us go... Sifting sand...

Vina After Dark’s warm siren vocals
will raise goosebumps across your skin as you head-nod to chilled out drums, groovy bass, and ethereal, crying guitar lines.
And if you’re lyrically focused, you’re in luck: think Emily Haines’s poetic acuity with Nina Simone’s tender sparseness.
